Two Revell 1/48th scale F-14 Tomcats

Revell 1/48th scale F-14 Tomcat

1.     Funny story - I built the first of these two Revell 1/48th scale F-14 Tomcats when I was only about nine or ten years of age. I thought it was a great model aircraft but was quickly disappointed that my own abilities didn't turn out a model to the quality I desired. I quickly became disinterested in the result and used it for spares in the making of various imaginative sci-fi models! A few years later I became interested in building a 'proper' Tomcat so I went and bought another Revell kit with the intention of doing it better this time. As part of this project I dug out the remains of the first one I built. I realised that I could easily harvest back all the 'spares' (for the horizontal and vertical tails) and build a complete kit from the bits. So I decided to build a new one AND resurrect the old one. I think I did quite a good job for what is an average effort by Revell. It reflects my knowledge and skills at the time.

2.     Nowadays I would view these results with disdain. More evidence of how far our skills develop over the years. 3.     The irony is that just a few years later I purchased a Verlinden "Super Set" in order to super-detail a new-build F-14. 4.     This new build never happened. The irony never escaped me that I would have ended up with three F-14's.... 5.     Each of the three would have reflected different stages of my model-building career. I was chasing my tail.

6.     There is always a better Tomcat out there. Anyway, I finally lost interest and gave the Verlinden set away to a neighbour who was more interested in US Navy hardware than I was. 7.     Still, the project is interesting to look back upon. It was by no means unique. I have built more than one Spitfire and Phantom over the years because I was unhappy with the last one I built. 8.     This model was airbrushed with Humbrol Enamels and then was finished with Super Decals decals
