In the sequel the world of MIB gets a bit
more 'fleshed out'. Where the worm guys only got a brief appearance
in the first movie they now get the full attention they deserve.
Jack Jeebs returns with a whole segment of the movie devoted to him.
Great. Even the reappearance of David Cross (as a completely new
character 'Newton') is welcome. So, all the old favourites are there
with bigger roles.
Essentially the plot is more-or-less the
same. Alien comes to earth disguised as human threatening to destroy
the planet. This time Agent J has to retrieve Agent K from
retirement in order to recover a memory that K has about the
whereabouts of 'the light
of
zartha' (or something like that). The plot revels in its twists on
old expectations - much as the first movie did. Aliens aren't just
people in odd makeup. Aliens really are ALIEN. They are BIG or small
& have lots of arms and legs. Proper aliens, not the Star Trek
variety. The film plays with scale often. The ideas is, of course,
not original and similar ideas have appeared before in the Twilight
Zone and the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. However, such
imagination is always welcome. There is a long running joke about
who is and what is really an alien. It only wears thin if referring
to people unknown outside of the US!
This is a great family movie, humorous, with
the expected mix of comedy, action and romance. As usual Will Smith
ad libs in some of the funnier lines. Rosario Dawson plays it petty
straight as the love interest (Laura Vasquez). Tommy Lee Jones is as
dead-pan as usual. The dynamic between him and Will Smith remains
that of new-boy and older mentor/guide. No matter how hard Will's
character tries he always ends up looking like the awkward kid. This
is laid-back fun for all the family. Inoffensive and charming all
the way. |
