Evolution

Evolution (2001)

Directed by Ivan Reitman. Story & Screenplay by Don Jakoby, David Diamond & David Weissman. Starring David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Orlando Jones, Sean William Scott, Dan Aykroyd

Summary: Alien micro-organisms land on earth on a meteorite and start to evolve rapidly into a threat. Can two college professors save the day? For more go to www.imdb.com

Impressions of the Movie

A star-studded comedy about a motley crew (consisting of an unlucky firefighting cadet, two college professors and geeky-sexy government scientist) who have to save the world from Alien Invasion when the military screw it up. Brought to you by the people who brought you Ghostbusters. The appearance of Dan Aykroyd reminds us of that classic. Fighting the rapidly evolving space aliens is a cast including the likes of Academy Award winner Julianne Moore as the Head of the CDC Dr Allison Reed in stockings and suspenders! Wow. (If unlikely.)  Not only clever and good looking but funny too. Then there is David Duchovny as the college professor Dr Ira Kane previously ejected from the Pentagon for incompetence. He has been biding his time at a small-town-USA college before his anticipated break back into big-time science.

Then there is his side kick fellow professor played by Orlando Jones who is blessed with some of the funniest lines in the movie. In his role as Prof Harry Phineas Block he discovers the meteorite in his role as local representative of the USGS. Finally we have Sean William Scott who hasn't made a single film worth shit ever but finally lands on his feet as the hapless firefighter-in-waiting Wayne Grey. This completes the odd-ball crew of misfits

So, why but this on DVD? Because it is so inoffensive and charming. We have watched it dozens of times and haven't got bored. It is now a firm family favourite. If you haven't seen it for a while you would develop a need to see it again. What's the magic? Yes, it is funny. Yes, it has a thumping good soundtrack. But it is more than that.

The obvious chemistry between the actors is marvellous. They deliver one-liner after one-liner so memorable that you'll end up quoting this movie at length: for example "There is always time for lubricant!", "Great-gogo-mogah!", "Ready for lunch, or have you already eaten?",  "Let's shampoo us some aliens!", "Nasty", "That's a face for Radio!" to name but a few.

Evolution     The script was originally not meant to be funny. Ivan Reitman rewrote the serious sci-fi horror as a comedy. The 'fruit-basket' scene where Duchovny shows his arse was actually the actor's idea as was Julianne Moore's character's clumsiness. Head and Shoulders does not actually contain selenium sulphide unless you buy the Intensive Treatment Shampoo. The colour of the shampoo in the movie is pink. In the UK it is blue. Duchovny turned down a role in "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" to be in "Evolution". There is an obvious continuity goof in the scene with the shoplifter in the dressing-room. Her clothes change between shots.

So there you have it - one of the funniest movies you will ever see - with a great cast. Enjoy.
